OPPOSITES ATTRACT

Like the North and South poles, without any similarities, opposites attract. This story is about a pair of twin sisters Celia and Milia. Though these girls had a lot in common, they had some differences, too. Celia was tall and serious and Milia was short and funny.

During their summer break, not knowing what to do to pass their time, they decided to go on an adventure, since they never had been on one. After packing their backpacks, they traveled to the countryside near their town.

The next morning, they ventured into a nearby forest. It was beautiful with a sparkling stream flowing by, butterflies fluttering around, flowers dancing in the wind, and tall redwood trees covering the entire hillside. Losing track of time and direction, they walked deep into the forest and got lost.

Suddenly, they heard a “POOF!” behind them. They whirled around and saw a person who looked like a wizard. “Who are you?” they both said at the same time, startled.

“I am a wizard. My name is Clarion. And may I ask why you girls are here alone in this forest?”

Milia, the short and funny one, amused, asked, “Hey, if you are a wizard, then where’s that traffic cone thingy the wizards wear on their head?”

“ That's not funny, Milia. Maybe this wise old man can help us!” Celia snapped. “Uh, my sister and I are here to have an adventure, since we never had been on one and we got lost. Can you pleeeeease help us?”

Clarion was surprised. He said, “Help you? Sure, but I’ve got a quest waiting for you to help me.” The girls jumped with delight. They finally had a real adventure to have!

They said excitedly, “What do we have to do?”

“Well, you have to retrieve something from the mountains,” Clarion said, smiling.

“Snow-capped mountains! Can we go sledding?” Milia blabbered.

“There's no time for that, Milia! Right now we have to solve that quest so that WE CAN GO HOME!”

“Okay! What does it look like?” Celia calmed down.

“I’m afraid I can’t say that. You have to see it for yourselves. And by the way, I will give you a map of the mountains. There will be many obstacles lying on your path, so be careful.” Clarion warned.

So they prepared to solve the quest.

Clarion, with a snap of his finger, teleported Celia and Milia to a mountain glacier far, far, away. While walking and Celia, who was good with map reading, followed the trail of clues, they came to the first obstacle, a crevasse with no way to cross it.

“It's impossible! Milia said, but “Wait, Celia, Mommy Longlegs, since you’re sooooo tall, you can help us cross. Stretch your legs. Mind you, don't let me fall.”

Mommy longlegs? Ignoring the joke, Celia answered, “Fine.”

Saying so, Celia stretched her legs over to the other side, she crossed the crevasse carrying Milia in her arms.

On they went, until the end of the adventurous hike, they reached the second obstacle, a cave with a narrow opening. Milia, being short, said, "I guess it’s my turn now.” and left while Celia waited for her.

The cave floor was filled with sharp needle ice and Milia had to climb the rocky walls like climbing on a spider wall to move forward. After a long and tiring climb, she gasped. She stepped into a room with golden walls, and tiles made out of rubies, sapphires, and emeralds. And then, she saw a shimmering staff made out of silver, with a diamond-studded head. “This must be it!” she said with triumph. She retrieved the staff and carefully made her way back.

“I was wondering where you were!” Celia said, hugging Milia.“I thought you were gone forever!”

She looked at the staff in Milia’s hand. “Is it a staff?” Celia asked. “Yep, it's a pole. A very expensive pole” said Milia and they giggled together, happy that they had reached the end of the quest.

So on they went until they saw Clarion waiting for them where they had started. “Why, you girls did it!” Clarion said happily. “Now I shall give you girls a gift for your achievement.” Saying so, Clarion gave each of them a magic wand just like his. It could do real magic, and soon the two girls were jumping with joy.

“Thank you, Clarion!” Both girls said, hugging him. “Will we ever see you again?” “Of course you will,” Clarion answered, waving goodbye. The wise old wizard, with another snap of his fingers, disappeared in a flash of light.

Walking home, the girls could not forget their adventure.

Celia hugged her sister and said, “Thank you for being funny. You know, I was really scared.”

Milia couldn’t hold back her tears, and said, “Thank you for reading the map and being serious and getting us back. I can see our home,” pointing ahead. “LET'S STICK TOGETHER to make many more adventures,” and they smiled brightly as they could as they made their way home.
