“It’s not our disabilities, it’s our abilities that count.”  -Chris Burke, Down syndrome advocate.    Last summer, on my trip to West Bengal, India, I volunteered at a school for differently-abled children. At first, all I wanted was proof of work that I would be able to submit here, at my school. But my experience there helped me more than those submitting the paperwork ever would. It gave me a new perspective on life itself, for which I am very grateful to the children there. There once was a girl named Sienna and her best friend Maya. In one of their sleepovers, as they were fast asleep, Sienna dreamt herself being in her storybook traveling to a fantasy world with Maya. “I wish , we could go there,” Sienna whispered.   Suddenly, there was a flash of light. ZAP!                                                      Sienna was gone and so was her storybook.  When Sienna woke, she gasped.   “The End.” Every single one of us, anyone who has ever heard a story, has heard these two words uttered at the end of a vivid journey into the depths of a writer's imagination. A few moments after these syllables, the book was closed, the lights were off and we drifted off into a dreamful sleep full of the whispering hills, the creepy forests, and the magical wonderlands we heard about in these stories. Over the years, we slowly and steadily accumulated a treasure trove of knowledge and a mind full of plots, characters, and climaxes, and we read books that seemed to get larger as we grew. Soon thereafter, we sorted the books we read into those that were outstanding and those that were disappointing. Like the legends of yore, the superheroes we so adore, many books step into the spotlight and relish their popularity, while others retract into the shade of obscurity. But why is this so? “When saving people from someone ferocious, with kindness , that ferocious one will someday be your friend.” Have you heard of the name Eraser World? Well, this story is about  four eraser friends, Furry, the teddy bear, Finny, the dolphin, Shelly, the turtle, and Bubbly, the fish   These erasers have never seen or touched any pencils or their gray marks. One day, Furry decided to go fishing. He grabbed his fishing pole and bait. As he fished, he saw a little underwater friend Shelly.  “Hello!” Furry called, startled. When Shelly looked up, Furry saw a sad look on her face. On asking what the matter was, he learned that Shelly had lost her friends Finny and Bubbly deep down in the waters. Hearing this, Furry turned into a sleuth to help his new friend. With a magic touch from Shelly, Furry could breathe underwater by wearing a sleek diving suit that could provide oxygen for many hours. HERO, WHO ARE YOU?

Throughout our lives, we have seen in our pop culture most people’s perception of what a hero is. We have seen countless times Superman fly in to save the day, or Captain America fend off aliens with his shield, or even Iron Man heroically save the existence of humanity with a snap of his fingers, but what really is the definition of heroism? What makes a person a hero? Merriam-Webster describes a hero as “ a person admired for achievements and noble qualities.” Perhaps that definition is valid but it could be elaborated upon much more. In my eyes, what makes a person a hero are the facts that he or she must put the lives and needs of others on equal, if not higher, footing as their own, have the boldness to accomplish something no one else dares to try, to possess the courage to be afraid and to have the courage to forgive, if not forget.    SELFLESS   First of all, a hero needs to be selfless, which is, to say, that the hero needs to believe that all other people are ...
