LEAFLA, THE AUTUMN LEAF

This is a story about a little autumn maple leaf who has not fallen from the tree, YET!

Little Maple Leafla couldn't sleep. She was thinking about going to Ground School with her friends. She loved her teachers, and she was really excited to get to meet them again after her summer break.

“Leafla, come down to breakfast,” Leafla’s mom called, “School starts in half an hour and you don’t want to get late.” “Coming mom,” Leafla called out. She ran into the bathroom to brush her teeth. After Leafla finished, she darted down the stairs, being awoken by the smell of waffles, her favorite. While Leafla ate breakfast, her dad walked into the kitchen. “Are you sure you don’t want me to take you there?” he asked. “No, thanks, I don’t mind flying,” Leafla said after swallowing a big waffly bite. Her school was just ten feet away, in the other branch.  "Have fun," her parents said once Leafla was out the door.

After flying to her bus stop, she sat on her spot, and carefully, she let her body drop. She wasn’t scared, though. She was a leaf, and she had tons of practice through last year’s autumn. Leafla waited for her bus, called the Windbus. The Windbus, once it arrives, will take Leafla in its invisible seats to the Ground School. While Leafla waited, she saw her friends waiting for the Windbus too. After waiting, several minutes, Leafla felt the Windbus’s cold AC breeze. Leafla expected herself to fall, but, surprisingly, she didn’t! Leafla kicked her tree branch, making it shake but she still couldn’t fly. Her friends left after waiting for a long time. Poor Leafla was all alone! She was stuck.

“Well, I have my phone with me,” Leafla said to herself. She carefully reached into her pocket and dialed her dad. Leafla told her dad about all that had happened, and her dad said that he will be there soon. After waiting for a bit, her parents rescued her. “Thank you,” Leafla said to her parents. At last, Leafla told herself, “patience is the key to everything!”

The next day, a new friend of Leafla named

Ladybugrenalda waited for her Woodbus. Unlike the Windbus, the Woodbus had long tree branches for crawly bugs and other creatures like slendery worms and feathery birds to climb down to the Ground School.

Since Ladybugrenalda was new at school, she didn’t really know how to get on the Woodbus, but she thought it would be easy to get on. “What can possibly go wrong?” thought Ladybugrenalda and smiled to herself. She waved at Leafla who was waiting nearby. Leafla waved back. After a wait, Ladybugrenalda saw the Woodbus with lots of branches sticking out on each side looking like arms.

The Woodbus driver instructed Ladybugrenalda and others to jump on one of the branches, but, surprisingly, Ladybugrenalda’s legs were frozen. She was scared. Scared of heights! Leafla saw this coming. She had experienced this. Without any hesitation and wanting to help she glided toward Ladybugrenalda and carefully picked her up and flew down to the Woodbus. She then cautiously set Ladybugrenalda down on one of the branches. Leafla told her to hold on tight. “Thank you”, Ladybugrenalda said, her eyes twinkling. Leafla smiled and flew back to her Windbus. The driver applauded her heroism and the others did too.

Another year passes by and Leafla manages to stay with her parents growing a year older and bigger, ready for next autumn, surviving the fall.
