“It’s not our disabilities, it’s our abilities that count.”  -Chris Burke, Down syndrome advocate.    Last summer, on my trip to West Bengal, India, I volunteered at a school for differently-abled children. At first, all I wanted was proof of work that I would be able to submit here, at my school. But my experience there helped me more than those submitting the paperwork ever would. It gave me a new perspective on life itself, for which I am very grateful to the children there. It all started at my Middle School, where NJHS (The National Junior Honor Society) gave me the assignment for the volunteer hours to be completed over the summer. My grandparents found the Bidhan Chandra Pratibandhi Karmakendra, ABLING THE DISABLED, (named after Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, former Honorable Chief Minister of West Bengal and inaugurated by Mother Teresa), as a suitable special needs school for me to finish the assignment by working there. There once was a girl named Sienna and her best friend Maya. In one of their sleepovers, as they were fast asleep, Sienna dreamt herself being in her storybook traveling to a fantasy world with Maya. “I wish , we could go there,” Sienna whispered.   Suddenly, there was a flash of light. ZAP!                                                      Sienna was gone and so was her storybook.  When Sienna woke, she gasped. DEFINITION OF A STORY - The Test of Time

  “The End.” Every single one of us, anyone who has ever heard a story, has heard these two words uttered at the end of a vivid journey into the depths of a writer's imagination. A few moments after these syllables, the book was closed, the lights were off and we drifted off into a dreamful sleep full of the whispering hills, the creepy forests, and the magical wonderlands we heard about in these stories. Over the years, we slowly and steadily accumulated a treasure trove of knowledge and a mind full of plots, characters, and climaxes, and we read books that seemed to get larger as we grew. Soon thereafter, we sorted the books we read into those that were outstanding and those that were disappointing. Like the legends of yore, the superheroes we so adore, many books step into the spotlight and relish their popularity, while others retract into the shade of obscurity. But why is this so?   Jealousy is deceitful and hateful from within, A beautiful but poisonous oleander that cannot be believed in, On the exterior, it looks like any other angelic flower, But oleander holds deadly toxins, upon you they have the power. This feeling of resentment can make you feel like you can do anything, Be able to take roots in minds and give painful stings, Of pain and anger to people unknowing, While the real reason for jealousy keeps growing and spreading. Jealousy attracts the weak, the strong, the angels, and the devils, Drawing us to itself like the beautiful flower’s petals, And jealousy’s stem, where Man’s insecurities reside, Sustains that envy through Man’s pride. Like the North and South poles, without any similarities, opposites attract. This story is about a pair of twin sisters Celia and Milia. Though these girls had a lot in common, they had some differences, too. Celia was tall and serious and Milia was short and funny.  During their summer break, not knowing what to do to pass their time, they decided to go on an adventure, since they never had been on one. After packing their backpacks, they traveled to the countryside near their town.  The next morning, they ventured into a nearby forest. It was beautiful with a sparkling stream flowing by, butterflies fluttering around, flowers dancing in the wind, and tall redwood trees covering the entire hillside.
