UMA

 

“Power is a magical phenomenon. There is no need to show, with heroic deeds, people know.”

One Monday morning, a little girl named Uma was going to The Valley of Learning Elementary School. It was her first day of second grade. She and her parents have moved to the city for a new life, and she loved the place the moment she laid eyes on it.

 “Here we are!“ Her dad said from the driver’s seat. “Grab your backpack, Uma. Learn a lot, and have a nice day!“ Uma said, “I will, dad. Goodbye!“ 

Uma opened the car door, hopped off, and closed the door behind her. Her dad drove off, and Uma opened the doors of her new school. She was nervous. There were several signs in the lobby and she followed the second-grade arrow, which was up the stairs and to the right. Walking towards the stairs, she thought, “Who will be my new teacher? How many friends will I have? I guess I’ll find out when I get there.” 

Before she knew it, she was up the stairs. “Okay, now, to the right.” She said. She walked to the right, and then she saw her classroom. She took a deep breath, then opened the door. Her teacher was standing in the doorway, greeting the students.

“Hello!” Her teacher said in a kind voice.”I’m Mrs. Warren. Who are you?” Uma replied, “My name is Uma.” “Beautiful name! Shall I show you where your desk is, Uma?” Mrs. Warren asked. “No, thank you, Mrs. Warren. I can manage.” Uma said. “No? Well, if you need any help, I will be there.” Mrs. Warren said. Uma smiled at her, then walked to her desk. She unpacked her backpack and put her markers, pencils, crayons, and erasers into her desk. Then she walked over to her cubby and hung up her backpack. She walked back to her desk and sat down, quietly waiting for the class to start.”Ting! Ting! Ting!” The school bell informed them for school to start. They heard the morning announcements, then they said the Pledge of Allegiance, had a moment of silence, then sat down. The morning announcements were over, meaning that school had started.

They started off with some math, basic adding, and subtracting with regrouping. While the teacher asked the final question, there was this feeling Uma felt when she thought of Mrs. Warren. Uma’s brain was saying,” Mrs. Warren is wondering if anyone can solve this.” Uma heard what it said, and quickly solved the question. “The answer to 786 +292 is 1078, Mrs. Warren.” The teacher was astonished. She said, ”Wow, Uma! You solved it without even writing.”

As days went by, Mrs. Warren identified Uma as being a gifted one in mathematics. She would solve complex math in a second and soon Uma was called a brain calculator. But, what they didn’t know is that Uma had other powers.

Bill was a quiet boy and he was very kind to others. He was self-organized and always did everything on time. He loved collecting fossils and wanted to be a paleontologist when he grew up. He was a very good friend of Uma’s and they almost shared the same interests, like, math, music, and art but the most common was watching baking shows. 

But, one day, at recess, Uma saw Bill staring at the ground. He was gazing at something without blinking his eyes and not paying much attention to the actions happening around him. Bill had scraped his arms and he was lost in his own thoughts.

 “What is the matter?” Uma asked him. Bill did not answer her. Uma called again and this time Bill looked up, surprised. “Nothing much. Everything is fine.” But Uma knew it's not true. She could sense it and read his mind. “Bill has lost his favorite fossil that he had brought to school for show and tell, and it was stolen by Shawn, the bully and he pushed Bill, and Bill landed on the pebbles. This caused his scraped arms.” 

”I know what happened, Bill. Come with me. Let's go and find Shawn.” Uma said. Bill, unsure, stood, and followed Uma. Searching for the whole playground, Shawn was nowhere to be found. Just as they were leaving, Uma saw Shawn sitting all by himself, alone. Seeing them, Shawn got frightened. He knew that he was caught and nervously handed the fossil. But, Bill was hesitant thinking he would hurt him again instead Shawn apologized for his mistake and left his hiding place. Bill was startled and asked Uma, ”how did you know?” 

Uma whispered in his ear, ”I am a telepath. Don’t tell anyone,” and she smiled.

From that day, Uma learned that,

People with powers,

have the ability to help others.
