THE EARTH IN FIVE SENSES - A POEM

Celebrating 51 years of EARTH Day



To me, the Earth looks like

an obloid sphere that shines with blue and green,
from space, it's beautiful, what a sight to be seen. 

To me, the Earth smells like

fragrant flowers, wet grass after a rainfall,
and sweet-smelling air, loved by all.

To me, the Earth tastes like

sweet fruits and savory vegetables
with such a taste, it's unforgettable.

To me, the Earth feels like

home, a warm hug, and family,
Earth takes care of us very carefully.

To me, the Earth sounds like

ocean waves crashing on the shore
birds whistling in the trees 
pushed by the wind uproar,
and silent mountains, towering strong,
and these are the sounds that are with us all along.

Oh, Earth, you are so beautiful,
thank you for all that you do.
You provide us with everything we need.
Oh! We love you indeed.

MORE ALIKE, LESS DIFFERENT

“It’s not our disabilities, it’s our abilities that count.”  -Chris Burke, Down syndrome advocate.    Last summer, on my trip to West Bengal, India, I volunteered at a school for differently-abled children. At first, all I wanted was proof of work that I would be able to submit here, at my school. But my experience there helped me more than those submitting the paperwork ever would. It gave me a new perspective on life itself, for which I am very grateful to the children there. It all started at my Middle School, where NJHS (The National Junior Honor Society) gave me the assignment for the volunteer hours to be completed over the summer. My grandparents found the Bidhan Chandra Pratibandhi Karmakendra, ABLING THE DISABLED, (named after Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, former Honorable Chief Minister of West Bengal and inaugurated by Mother Teresa), as a suitable special needs school for me to finish the assignment by working there.      WITHIN US Fire Fire purifies our body, glow, and warmth from flames,  That’s what we see in all the powerful legends. This element sparks focus, motivation, and a will to act, The fire element, inside us, gives energy and creates a big impact. Water 70 percent of our human bodies are made up of this, The water element, to us, is the life we live. Long before I started my journey of a lifetime, I used to think that life was perfect in every way and that you don’t need to work really hard to make it better or appreciated. I was wrong and over the period of four years, I shed light on life’s true purpose. When I started taekwondo, I realized that life is not always perfect or how you want it to be, but you need constant determination to make your life choices and others’ lives better. Taekwondo helped me achieve the fact that having a positive and strength-filled self, contributes to this monumental goal. “I develop myself in a positive manner and avoid anything that will reduce my mental growth and physical health. SIENNA AND HER FANTASY DREAM

There once was a girl named Sienna and her best friend Maya. In one of their sleepovers, as they were fast asleep, Sienna dreamt herself being in her storybook traveling to a fantasy world with Maya. “I wish , we could go there,” Sienna whispered.   Suddenly, there was a flash of light. ZAP!                                                      Sienna was gone and so was her storybook.  When Sienna woke, she gasped. In her eyes, she knew where she was… in her storybook and Sienna was NOT ALONE. Her friend Maya was here too. “Maya, Maya, wake up!” Sienna screamed. "W...W...W...Where are we?" Maya screamed.
