“It’s not our disabilities, it’s our abilities that count.”  -Chris Burke, Down syndrome advocate.    Last summer, on my trip to West Bengal, India, I volunteered at a school for differently-abled children. At first, all I wanted was proof of work that I would be able to submit here, at my school. But my experience there helped me more than those submitting the paperwork ever would. It gave me a new perspective on life itself, for which I am very grateful to the children there. It all started at my Middle School, where NJHS (The National Junior Honor Society) gave me the assignment for the volunteer hours to be completed over the summer. My grandparents found the Bidhan Chandra Pratibandhi Karmakendra, ABLING THE DISABLED, (named after Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, former Honorable Chief Minister of West Bengal and inaugurated by Mother Teresa), as a suitable special needs school for me to finish the assignment by working there.   Jealousy is deceitful and hateful from within, A beautiful but poisonous oleander that cannot be believed in, On the exterior, it looks like any other angelic flower, But oleander holds deadly toxins, upon you they have the power. This feeling of resentment can make you feel like you can do anything, Be able to take roots in minds and give painful stings, Of pain and anger to people unknowing, While the real reason for jealousy keeps growing and spreading. Jealousy attracts the weak, the strong, the angels, and the devils, Drawing us to itself like the beautiful flower’s petals, And jealousy’s stem, where Man’s insecurities reside, Sustains that envy through Man’s pride. Each of us must know that jealousy branches off of low self-esteem, But we can prevent this feeling; of happiness and peace we can dream. Identification The bus screeched as it came to a halt in front of Westbrook School of the Arts. Ethan was not ready for his first day. He had just moved from Hoboken, New Jersey to Albuquerque two days ago. He didn’t want to leave his friends and his school back in Hoboken, but his dad had gotten a new job and his family explained to him that it was for the best. And so here he was. At a private school. He’d always liked Art and Theater, and only for the fact that there wasn’t a lot of homework for those classes, but not enough to be sent to a school for it. He was sure he’d find nerds and geeks here of all sorts. He wondered if he’d find anyone like him here: smart, athletic, and lazy. Probably not. At 8:25 on the dot, the bell rang.      WITHIN US Fire Fire purifies our body, glow, and warmth from flames,  That’s what we see in all the powerful legends. This element sparks focus, motivation, and a will to act, The fire element, inside us, gives energy and creates a big impact. Water 70 percent of our human bodies are made up of this, The water element, to us, is the life we live. It allows the body and mind to move, flow and create, Good thoughts and actions are how they originate.
